Parkinson’s Disease was named after Dr. James Parkinson, a pioneer in the medical field but at the same time was a social reformer and a political activist. According to the website Parkinson’s UK, he wrote many pamphlets that were highly critical of the political system of the day and advocated reforms such as representation of the people in the House of Commons and universal suffrage. In addition, Dr. Parkinson qualified as a surgeon after accomplishing his studies at the London Hospital Medical College in 1784 which helped him identify the early manifestations of the illness. Later on, he became famous for publishing “An Essay on Shaking Palsy” which identified the effects of the disease on the human body that led to the disorder to bear his name which is now called, Parkinson’s Disease.
Before the disease bearing Dr. James Parkinson’s name, Parkinson’s Disease was also called Shaking palsy because of the tremor this disorder causes in the body. Another name for the disease was Paralysis Agitans. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Paralysis Agitans is Latin for Shaking Palsy which is why this term was also associated with the disorder. Aside from Shaking Palsy and Paralysis Agitans, the disease was also known as Idiopathic Parkinsonism which was also used after it was named Parkinson’s Disease. According to the website MedicineNet.com, Idiopathic means, of unknown origin, while Parkinsonism is another term for Parkinson’s Disease.
