The Three Styles Of Leadership Essay

1729 words - 7 pages

Different situations call for different leaders. Whatever the situation a leader will rise to meet the needs of others. A baseball captain is well prepared to lead a group of baseball players, but won’t be able to lead a group of soldiers into battle because different situations call for different traits in leaders. In order to be a great leader, the leader must recognize what and who they are as a leader. Furthermore, a leader must recognize what style of leader they are. To understand the styles of leadership; we look into Lewin’s styles of leadership: authoritarian, democratic or laissez-faire and effectively develop and use good leadership skills in order to improve as a great leader. So by understanding the styles of leadership and knowing how to effectively use these good leadership skills are steps required to become a great leader.
When it comes to leadership, there are 3 different styles in which a leader can fall into Authoritarian, democratic or lassiez-faire as according to Lewin’s style of leadership. In order for a leader to ultimately improve, very first thing to do is recognize style of leadership the leader falls into and what are its advantages and disadvantages. We first look into Authoritarian, it is defined “Authoritarian leaders assume positions of intellectual and behavioral superiority in groups” (Beebe & Masterson p.215). Meaning authoritarian leader is a dictator; this leader will dictate policy, procedure, goals and have full power. An advantage of being an Authoritarian leader is that, there will be a clear defined leader, leader will keep group on task, and mainly helps group complete task on hand. However, the disadvantage of being an Authoritarian leader is that, the group members may not have a saying in the work, some will not be recognized for their work and ultimately group members have no power. Even though the idea of being an Authoritarian leader sounds terrible to group members, we need to understand that of the 3 style there is no clear style that works best because different situations calls for different leader.
Continuing on, we look into Democratic style of leadership, it is defined “Democratic leaders have more faith in the group than authoritarian leaders do and consequently try to involve members in making decision” (Beebe & Masterson p 215). Meaning democratic leadership is a very open style of leadership, everybody in the group gets a saying when it comes to decision making. The Advantages that democratic style bring is, it is good for changing situations, everybody gets a saying so the group a come up with best solution, and it is good for adopting to complex and broad situations. However its disadvantages are, it’s slow at decision making because everybody’s opinion is recognized and it can sometimes lead into a confrontation in the group. According to Lewin democratic style of leadership is most effective of the three, however this statement is easily arguable because as mentioned in the...
