The data which has been collected from the Garlic sprouting experiment proves to be inconclusive; however this is not to say that the data was not informative, or did not have influence on the questions being asked in the lab. The lab question states “Do insecticides and pesticides used on Industrial Garlic negatively impact the rapidity of growth of sprouts; in comparison to Organic Garlic?”. In answering this question, growth must be studied through time period, and quality of length. When looking at the data from Table 1, it can observe that on May 12 Industrial Garlic grew 1 sprout more than Organic did and on May 17 the Industrial Garlic grew 5 more sprouts than Organic did. For these reasons, the data from Table 1 cannot provide a clear conclusion to the lab question stated above. This could be prevalent for multiple reasons, which will be thoroughly examined in the evaluation section of this lab. Data could also be inconclusive due to a negligence to record data in a scheduled fashion, which remains the setback for the data presented in Table 1. The data collection starts on May 7, but the experiment started on the 5th. Then the data skips 5 days to May 12, where it promptly shows observation for the next 3 days in a row. At this time the data again skips 2 days in between collection of data for the dates between May 15 through 19. On May 20 more data is collected, and then no data is recorded for the next 4 days until the 24. From the 24, data is collected the very next day, when the lab ends. This inconsistence added to the inconclusive data which negatively impacts the ability make conclusions about the lab itself.
Despite these problematic errors and anomalies, looking at Table 3 (which correlates with Graph 2) we can see that in a trending manner, Organic Garlic sprouts averaged longer in length than Industrial spouts did on every day that data was collected (May, 20, 21 and 25). This helps to point in the direction of Industrial Garlic growth being negatively affected in comparison to Organic growth, however the data is minute and cannot be fully relied on for the conclusion of this lab report. Through out the experiment a few limitations occurred which negatively impacted the experiments outcome. One of the biggest weaknesses to this lab would have to be the inconsistency when recording data. As stated in the discussion, there was not a base consistency with data collection and recording. This left the data with “holes”, where sprout counts or sprout lengths suddenly dropped or jumped without data to explain possible reasoning behind these changes. It would have been more beneficial to set specific times to take down observations. These observations could have been taken every two days, in the morning before school started when the light reaching the second floor window where the experiment took place was not very significant. This could have given a more accurate knowledge of how much the sprouts grew in 24 hours.
This brings another important limitation to attention. Both plant brands were placed in front of the window sill in a second story floor facing east. One plant was placed in front of the other on a table which sat in front of the window every day for the 20 day time period of data collection. Every day, the tupperware contained with their appropriate Garlic brands were rotated, so each had a day closes to the window and a day furthest away from the window.
