In 2001 George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act and the act took effect in 2002. The United States, and President Bush, thought that the act would aid immigrant students and American students in education from the time they entered elementary throughout adulthood. The NCLB does just the opposite for most immigrated students and native students. Although the act was a good idea at the time in 2001, the lasting effects on students with their education now are appalling because of all the negative feedback that the act provides for most school districts because all the students’ different learning abilities show lower test scores in standardized testing. Although the NCLB has created inequality of education it has also discriminated against other parts in education such as funding.
No Child Left Behind was made for doing exactly what its title states: not leaving a child behind. Since the Act was set into law, there have been more dropouts, or children ‘disappearing’ in schools all throughout the United States doing just the opposite of the Act’s intentions. A study in Texas shows since the act only 70% of white students and only 50% of African American and Latino students graduate from high school within four years of entering the ninth grade (Darling-Hammond 2007). Most of the students do not graduate with the time of four years because they cannot pass the standardized tests which the NCLB require for every state to include for high school students. The NCLB was to focus on the students that have disabilities in learning, not push them away from education causing them to eventually drop out. Instead the NCLB awards the schools that have higher test scores which mainly come from native English tongue rather than immigrants because the schools are not willing to help under-achieved students, but meet the requirements of the NCLB so the school does not get shut down.
