Informal Report

Introduction

Overview

Electronic cigarettes have become very popular among many people trying to quit smoking traditional cigarettes as well as people searching for a safer alternative to taking in nicotine. Because they produce a vapor rather than smoke, electronic cigarettes are commonly used indoors since they do not leave an odor. This report will provide those with little knowledge of electronic cigarettes a description of what they are, how they work, and what electronic cigarette users inhale. The current controversy regarding the regulation and banning of electronic cigarettes affects a countless number of people throughout the country including myself.

Like traditional tobacco cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, deliver nicotine to the body; however, they do so by vaporizing the liquid in their cartridges (or tanks) allowing the user to simulate smoking. Vaporization of the liquid is performed by the atomizer, which heats up rapidly when in contact with the battery. The liquid, containing only a few ingredients (vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol), then disappears upon exhalation (San Mateo Medical Center). Electronic cigarettes have recently become increasingly more customizable as well. A certain type of electronic cigarette battery, also known as a “mechanical mod”, can be combined with a rebuildable atomizer, an atomizer with coils and wicks that can be modified to increase vapor production. The photo below, courtesy of FitVapes.com, provides a parts diagram of both a cartridge style electronic cigarette and a refillable tank style electronic cigarette.

Cartridge style electronic cigarettes are typically used to simulate the size and look of a traditional tobacco cigarette. The atomizer, as shown in the photo, is separate from the cartridge. Refillable tank style cigarettes include a built in atomizer inside the tank, and allow users to refill their tanks with any flavor they decide to put in them. There are numerous websites and stores that provide various flavors of “e-juice”. These websites and stores allow consumers to select the nicotine strength of the liquid as well as the mixture of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, the two main components in electronic cigarette liquid.
