Introduction
Purpose and Problem:
Entering the 21st century, many educational professionals are rethinking how students learn and teachers teach. One approach to rethinking education is by creating interdisciplinary learning and providing authentic learning experiences with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, known as STEM. Another approach to 21st century learning is to implement digital schools and one-to-one classrooms. Society’s changing views of technology requires curriculum to change as well. (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2013). Philosophy connects curriculum to a community of stakeholders it serves, including parents, teachers, and students. Major philosophical bases and educational philosophies influence curriculum. All philosophical frameworks are essential for integrating technology in interdisciplinary learning. However, Pragmatism best supports integrating technology in interdisciplinary studies for its belief of an ever changing society. When incorporating technology in lesson plans, it is vital for educators to ensure quality of content in an effort to ensure student performance and mastery of subject matter. Additionally, Perennialism, Progressivism, and Reconstructionism support the growth and development of students as skilled problem solvers and critical thinkers. Each educational philosophy and philosophical base contributes to designing interdisciplinary curriculum with integrated technology at the elementary level.
Historical. History of curriculum serves as a guide for curriculum makers, (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2013). Knowledge of the past can be used in the progress of making the future better. Because the teaching profession requires reflective practices, it is essential for educators to look back on what is and is not effective throughout the history of curriculum when making future decisions. Ideas of the colonial period influences integrating technology through their emphasis on the importance of language. Students and teachers receive and distribute language in new ways due to technological advances, therefore it is important for education to provide opportunities for students to learn in this new way as well. The national period’s democratic view of education translates to providing students choice and voice in their learning which can be done in 21st century classrooms with the use of integrated technology. Nineteenth-century European influences broaden the spectrum from which learners learn. Students in the 21st century obtain more knowledgeable of current events affecting global society more easily than ever before due to advances in information relay. Students gain knowledge via the world wide web and become active participants in discussions pertaining to the world. The universal education movement plays a large role in integrating technology because students do not receive their education from the teacher solely, rather they receive it through various approaches utilizing technology in school or at home. The transitional period provides insight by suggesting, as the saying goes “if learners don’t learn the way we teach, we should teach the way they learn.” Technology is a part of our daily lives and by incorporating it in our curriculum, educators realize the importance of designing curriculum that fits the needs of their students.
