Intellectual diversity is the notion that college students are being presented with only one side to politics. Specifically, the majority of colleges are liberal and therefore, outnumbering the amount of conservative ones. Thus, students are only receiving education based on one form of government. David Horowitz explains that we as young adults have experienced one-sided politics growing up. College is supposed to expand a person’s intellectual diversity, not limit it. Students should be taught both liberal and conservative views and then choose for themselves which view they agree with more. Even if intellectual diversity becomes a viable option, it will still remain up to the students in what they choose to do with the material that is presented.
Personally, I believe that students should be presented with both sides so they can make a well informed decision, not just based on what they have been taught, but on what they believe is true. Stanley Fish states “Opponents of the Academic Bill of Rights contend that despite disclaimers of any political intention and an explicit rejection of quotas, the underlying agenda is the decidedly political one of forcing colleges and universities to hire conservative professors in order to assure ideological balance.” While it may be useful to have an ideological balance between professors, it does not necessarily have to affect the way the individual runs their class. It should not matter what the professor believes; they still have to follow the ethics and rules of the university at which they are an instructor. The main reason for implementing an Academic Bill of Rights is to ensure that students are becoming well informed and rounded adults. This will be of great benefit to them in the future. The chief issue American universities are facing is a lack of dissent, ideas, and vigorous debate among its students. Essentially, intellectual diversity has been replaced with intellectual conformity.
David Horowitz, who is for Intellectual diversity, affirms his idea by refuting Stanley Fish’s claim. “Without true intellectual diversity, there can be a stifling uniformity of thought that is antithetical to the very idea of a university.” A university is conceived to be an institution of true intellectual diversity. Everyone is free to believe what they want and to have an equal opportunity to learn all views within the given society. Even if a professor does not personally believe in what is being taught, it should not interfere with the teaching of these values to the students. Colleges are meant to be a place where students explore varying ideas and who they want to become. Universities are providing these young minds with a disservice by expecting them to accept uniformity as an option.
As a solution to this ongoing debate, I propose the implementation of classes of both degrees to be available to those students who choose to broaden their intellectual capabilities.
