Socio-economic status tends to be the underlining factor between differences in seen in various race/ethnicities. Although a college students’ socio-economic status may differ across different races/ethnicities, they are much closer to other college students around them and share many similarities. However, race and ethnicity seems to continue playing a great role in their interactions with mental health anyways. This research will look at the behaviors of college students belonging to different races/ethnicity with reference to mental health as a means of providing an indication on the various reasons behind the diverse behaviors that they exhibit. At the same time, parents who live in White neighborhood do not exhibit this quality and they encourage children to develop protective racial socialization. These children obtain messages from parents expressing that the White majority despises Blacks. This protective socialization usually encourages the children to move with their Black peer instead of White children (Barr & Neville, 2014). Since, protective socialization usually takes place in majority white atmospheres, this can have many negative implications for the child’s mental health as such messages are likely to reduce their self-confidence of children – which is especially stronger when their schools, teachers, and peers are likely to be majority white .
Understandably, as a result, children who obtain proactive socialization message are able to mingle with their White peers much more successfully when compared to other group that gives protective message to the children. The schools themselves will encourage socialization between students belonging to different racial groups but, consequently, children belonging to minority racial groups do not interact with the others and will form isolated groups instead. The and district schooling rules do not allow students segregation based on their respective races, so the school district administrations often have to come up with ways to encourage the children to interact with each other like counseling. Consequently, the discernation that these children exhibit is directly associated with having parents belonging to different races (Barr & Neville, 2014).
The differences in children definitely plays a big role in mental health experience. For example, large numbers of Caucasian kids seem suffer from ADHD when compared with African-American kids even though biological differences between the two groups is not responsible for this difference. ADHD or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a mental illness affecting children who lack concentration ability, thereby negatively affecting their academic performance. Children with ADHD are likely to show this tendency when they become adults. At the same time, medication and professional help is available to parents who aim to reduce impact of ADHD on their children. Studies show that this disease is equally prevalent among children belonging to different races and social backgrounds as White and Black children have become victims of this disease. Despite this, studies noted disparity between White and Black parents while reporting this disease as few Black parents are likely to report ADHD and most are reluctant to do so. (Visser, et al., 2003).
