It didn’t start this morning or last night; it certainly didn’t start last week or last month. It started over two hundred years ago and it’s getting worse by the day. Global warming is an environmental issue that has everyone concerned. We must take action to control it and reverse it before is too late. Some people are skeptical about global warming. They think is something made up by politicians to scare their constituents. They believe it’s a myth created by someone in a high chair to profit from it. Although it is true that there are many companies that profit from the whole idea of global warming and cleaner air, global warming isn’t a myth.
Car companies sell expensive hybrid cars that promise to be good for the environment and create cleaner air. Appliance companies sell refrigerators, air conditioners and even TVs that promise to be more energy efficient. The list goes on and they all benefit greatly from the idea.
Global warming isn’t an idea or a myth, and it sure is more than just an excuse to make millions of dollars in profit. Global warming is a serious issue that needs to be dealt with now while there is still time. It all started with the industrial revolution. Ever since then global warming as become a problem that does nothing but get worse. It is not yet late, there are simple steps we can take that can reduce the happening of global warming and eventually bring it to a stop.
What exactly is global warming? This is a good question to ask ourselves prior to talking about its causes and effects. Global warming is “a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants“(Google Search).
Now that we know what global warming is, it is also important to understand what causes it. The burning of fossil fuels causes global warming. Other causes of global warming include the burning of large forests that trap CO2 and prevent it from getting up to the atmosphere. CO2 or carbon oxide is released into the atmosphere when you burn fossil fuel. There are other gasses that get released into the atmosphere that also affect global warming, but they aren’t as dangerous as carbon oxide. “Different greenhouse gases have very different heat-trapping abilities. Some of them can even trap more heat than CO2. A molecule of methane produces more than 20 times the warming of a molecule of CO2. Nitrous oxide is 300 times more powerful than CO2. Other gases, such as chlorofluorocarbons (which have been banned in much of the world because they also degrade the ozone layer), have heat-trapping potential thousands of times greater than CO2. But because their concentrations are much lower than CO2, none of these gases adds as much warmth to the atmosphere as CO2 does” (National Geographic).
