This book Into The Wild is about how a young man wants to get away from the world. He does escape from society, but ends up dying in the process. The author, Jon Krakauer, does a great job of describing Chris McCandless and his faults. Chris is an intelligent college graduate. He went on a two-year road trip and ended up in Alaska. He didn't have any contact with his parents in all of that time. Krakauer does a great job of interviewing everyone who had anything to do with McCandless from his parents, when he grew up, to the people who found his body in Alaska.
The story starts off with Chris hitchhiking in Alaska. He had decided to get away from the world and live in Alaska, Jack London style. He had hitchhiked all the way from South Dakota to Alaska. Chris was very excited about the trip. He was going to go into the wilderness alone. ?There was no talking him out of it. He was determined. He couldn?t wait to get out there and get started? (Krakauer 6). The story goes on a little more about his Alaskan odyssey, and then it goes back in time.
He was a very intelligent kid. He graduated from Emory University in Atlanta with a degree in history and anthropology. The day after his graduation, he went on a road trip. He drove all around the country without an itinerary. Chris didn?t tell his parents about this, of course. The only way they found out he was gone was when they went to visit him in Atlanta and his apartment was empty. He even took a new name, Alexander Supertramp.

He drove his old Datsun truck into the middle of the Mojave Desert to see how long he could stay. When a flash flood engulfed his truck, he fled to higher ground. Later, his pickup wouldn?t start, so he abandoned it. He was a devout believer of the writings of Tolstoy and Thoreau. They wrote about living with as little as possible and trying to find your true self. Chris took all of this writing to heart. When he disowned his truck, he also burned all of his money. He would hitchhike around the country without any money, living off the land. McCandless made trips to the Gulf of California in Mexico, Arizona, all the way up the Pacific coast to Seattle, South Dakota, and even a brief stop in Alaska. He fell in love with the land up north and he knew that he would make a longer return trip soon.
Chris spent his younger years living in California, but he didn?t remember any of it. During his trip, he made a stop in his old hometown. He went to his neighborhood and met some people his father knew. They told him his dad had another family in California. He had been married and had three kids before he met Chris?s mom Billie. Chris had no idea. This made Chris very angry at his parents for not telling him anything. This ?would ultimately turn...
