As the years passed I became more of a friend to the Video Pirate who owned the little green movie store. I had become a regular customer who would purchase such pirate videos as Straw Dogs & Men Behind The Sun. Until one Christmas came where he was tipped off that the police were going to raid his store. So he trusted me to take home all of the pirate VHS he had kept at the store in order to keep him safe from being arrested, and told me that I could watch as many of them as I liked, and as payment for doing him a favor I could keep a few of the titles that I enjoyed watching the most.
That was a very gory Christmas. I feasted on such delights as Nightmares In A Damaged Brain & John Carpenter’s new movie ‘Vampires’ which was still yet to be set a release date. Just a plastic case of analogue mystery, and even though I feared the possibility of it being a snuff movie, I wanted to know what was on that tape. So I popped it into my VCR, wrestled with the fact that maybe it was just blank, and hit play.
What I saw was something I would never forget. On screen was a Japanese man who was dressed as a Samurai, and he had already tied a young Japanese woman to a bed, before he began to dismember the poor woman. I was shocked at what I saw. For a second I thought that I had possibly discovered a snuff film, but it didn’t take long for me to laugh that idea off and realize that I had found something new. Something darker. Something disturbing. Something that could show me the truly dark side of cinema.
The only problem is I never knew what the title of the strange Japanese torture movie was.
Later in my life, around my early twenties I was walking through town when I bumped into a friend of a friend. I guy I knew as sparky, and he was just as big of a pot smoker as I was. He had come to my hour of need...
