Final EssayEvery human knows at least one language, spoken or signed. Linguistics is the science of language, including the sounds, words, and grammar rules. Words in languages are finite, but sentences are not. It is this creative aspect of human language that sets it apart from animal languages, which are essentially responses to stimuli. The rules of a language, also called grammar, are learned as one acquires a language. These rules include phonology, the sound system, morphology, the structure of words, syntax, the combination of words into sentences, semantics, the ways in which sounds and meanings are related, and the lexicon, or mental dictionary of words. When you know a language, you know words in that language, i.e. sound units that are related to specific meanings. However, the sounds and meanings of words are arbitrary. For the most part, there is no relationship between the way a word is pronounced and its meaning. Knowing a language encompasses this entire system, but this knowledge called competence is different from behavior called performance. As said, we may know a language, but we may also choose to not speak it. Although we are not speaking the language, we still have the knowledge of it.These are some of the many things I learned from our subject. I wasn't exposed to these this much since I was a graduate of Elementary teaching. Although we have English subjects, my background and foundation of Linguistics was not really that strong and I admit English has been my weakest point. But just for a month or two, I was educated, pressured to learn and forced to master such things. I could liken it to a roller coaster ride. Sometimes, I feel happy and excited to go to school but at times I feel like I'm so dumb and incapable, like a non excitant alien at the side. My classmates are all good in the subject! I feel so left behind. There was a time that I opted to back out, but I was left with no choice at all. I need to be a step higher for my students' sake. I don't want to be a principal or a part of the administration. That would entail a lot of work and less time to enjoy my life. I'm not even a Math genius or a scientist in the making. So, I boiled down to the idea that I should be at my best even my best will not be enough to surpass all the trials, to maintain my composure and take pleasure in enrolling the course.As a grade school Language teacher, I may not directly use the knowledge of linguistics in my day-to-day lessons. Instead, I may practice speaking, reading and writing, which are fundamental to communication in the language. However, each of these three areas is imbued with the knowledge that linguistics provides about the structure and meaning of language. I also use the knowledge of linguistics to teach language structure. English teachers must be informed about the basic ways that sentences are formed, provide meaning and incorporate different parts of speech. I was able to bring this knowledge to the table when...
