Introduction
Whenever people think of coffee, they will think of the name Starbucks. What is Starbucks? Starbucks Corporation is an American global coffee company and coffeehouse chain. Starbucks opens their first store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market back in 1971, they were only a roaster and retailer of whole bean and ground coffee, tea and spices. Today, Starbucks have more than 19000 retail stores in all over the world. The mission of Starbucks is “to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time” (Starbucks Corporation, 2014). Starbucks practices ethical sourcing, protecting the environment and in the meantime, involve in community. (Starbucks Corporation, 2014).
Upsides and Downsides of Starbucks
There are several upsides of Starbucks. Firstly, one of the upsides of Starbucks is they are quick and efficient. Even though with huge crowds, Starbucks still manages to deliver the products and services within a short time frame. Furthermore, Starbucks never serves any coffee that has been there for quite some times. They will make sure baristas rotate the coffee every 15 minutes. This is simply because Starbucks wants to let their customers have the best quality and freshness of coffee. As mentioned before, Starbucks serves variety of products from coffee, teas, smoothies to merchandizes. By offering variety of products, Starbucks this will meet different customer needs and wants. In addition, their employees as known as partners are treated well. Apart from that, Starbucks provides a training program for all the baristas to ensure the quality of the coffee. According to Groth and Lubin (2011), “Starbucks baristas undergo over 30 hours of training on everything from Frappuccino technique to the origins of coffee beans.” What’s more? Starbucks has upgraded their espresso machine to Swiss-made Mastrena which makes it easier and convenient for baristas to make a high quality espresso. Last but not least, another upside of Starbucks would be their convenience. Consumers can actually pay their bill by phones and Starbucks provide free WiFi on every store.
On the other hands, the downside of Starbucks would be they are too common. With more than 19000 stores around the world, we can see Starbucks anywhere anytime. According to Roos (2010), “there are 68 of Manhattan's 124 Starbucks are located within two blocks of another Starbucks.” Besides that, Starbucks has lost their uniqueness as they are too commercialized nowadays. Furthermore, Starbucks may be one of the factors that contributed to the obesity. With the sugar, milk and cream in their beverages, one could be obese by drinking Starbucks often. Finally, Starbucks also causes dispassionate or unmotivated baristas.
