As technology continues to improve, social networking sites increase in their use. In this digital age, nearly everyone has a social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) account. People are constantly updating their statuses, posting pictures, commenting, and liking every second. There has been an ongoing debate of the benefits of social media between introverts and extroverts. “You hear the word ‘social’ and it makes you think of gregarious individuals that like to get out of the house and meet new people. Then again, I’ve never met the man; I only ‘know’ him through his blogs and tweets.” Because of the increase in popularity of social media, people have begun to acknowledge themselves as online extroverts and offline introverts. The spread of social media empowers people to easily connect with an abundance of people. This digitally-consumed society insists on receiving and gaining information instantly. Furthermore, “Social media makes small talk more enjoyable because it allows us some level of control over the conversation. We can engage without necessarily committing to an ongoing dialogue.” Introverts feel “safe” behind the computer screen. They are given leisure to think before communicating. According to Branen (an introvert herself), introverts “often over-think every word” they “speak or write.” Although communicating online is immediate, people still have time to consider what they say before posting or sending their thoughts publicly. Because introverts are (more) comfortable on social media, they are given the freedom to post as confidently as they want. Ultimately, Branen claims that in the perspective of a stranger, it would be difficult to determine whether an individual is introverted or extroverted on social media. Ultimately, each individual has his or her own communication style.
Britney Fitzgerald’s article “Facebook Psychology: 7 Reasons Why We Act Differently Online” supports the claim that it is easy for anyone to share false information online and adopt an online persona through email and social networks in this digital age. This persona (online behavior) is not necessarily always charming. Because of the abundant connections social networks grant, people “care less about what” their “weak ties think.” For instance, a majority of the population has over one hundred “friends” on Facebook, but the majority most likely does not keep in contact with one another regularly. Research shows that “most people with close friends […] hope to impress those people […] as opposed to weak ties.” Subconsciously, humans are inclined to impressing close friends, which affects their self-esteem and confidence. This determines the way people use social media such as Facebook. Even though introverts gain energy from being by themselves; they are humans who also need assurance of their self-esteem. This explains why introverts can seem to interact with others on Facebook in a different light. Introverts may be a “different” person because they are more talkative and concerned when they are online talking to their close friends.
