Is France A Socialist State? Essay

956 words - 4 pages

The definition of socialism from Merriam-Webster is: “a way of organizing a society in which major industries are owned and controlled by the government rather than by individual people and companies.” Now, socialism isn’t necessary a bad thing; the Netherlands, Finland, Portugal and Denmark have been noted as some of the happiest countries in the world, all falling under a socialist government. Examples of France being a socialist country is: the government has suggested to one hundred companies that they should use anonymous résumés, the president can dissolve the parliament whenever he sees fit and the current President, François Hollande, is a part of the socialist party.
For the history of socialism; Karl Marx was the founder of socialism, along with communism. In his philosophy, he made it clear that capitalism is the worst thing for a society. He said in his philosophy, “[That socialism is] a way of organizing a society in which major industries are owned and controlled by the government rather than by individual people and companies.” In France, the government fully owns over 50% of businesses and has part ownership over numerous other businesses. Because of Francois Hollande being a part of the socialist party in France, he pledged to raise taxes and increase federal spending. In one of his speeches, he said that the higher taxes would be imposed more on the rich to create more unity and reduce the gap between the rich and poor. According to Karl Marx, the French Revolution played a part of his philosophy; Marx wrote: “[the Revolution] abolished feudal property in favour of bourgeois property,” meaning that the Revolutionaries took the land from the feudal lords and made it ‘bourgeois’ land. Bourgeois is defined as: a characteristic of the middle class. One of the main points of socialism is to take away from the rich and give to the poor to try to make everyone as equal as possible.
Contrary to the American traditional belief that democracy and capitalism is the best for every country, socialism isn’t evil and can work. France has been a successful and powerful country since the end of World War 2; being a member of the Permanent Security Council of the United Nations and in the top 5 in the world for GDP. The French people can directly vote for their President, something America doesn’t have. The simple fact is, socialism has led France to becoming a powerhouse status around the world. Because of Socialism, France doesn’t make legislation to protect the rich, unlike in America where the top 1% can get away with not paying taxes or do almost anything to gain a profit; rather, the French government does its best to protect the poor and try to get them back on their feet to be a contributing factor to society. One of the main beliefs of Socialism...
