Dear America,
Racism is a word that can be defined in different ways to different people. To me it's a repulsive term that represents closed-mindedness. Being different in today's society is something people do not understand. Racism caused many laws to be made. One was the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prevents discrimination in the basis of race, color, religion, sex and national origin. Even though laws has been set, racism still exists today and I'm truly against it. I've witnessed it several times and it also happened to me one time. One day I went to an open interview and I was the only African American there. Once it was my turn to get interviewed they made an announcement saying they had enough people already. They didn't interview me and I know it was because of my race and the restaurant was owned by a different one. Every since then I had a different outlook on life because I realized nowadays no one gets treated equally because of your race, gender, how you dress, how you look, and how you act.
Statistics provided by CNN and the Kaiser Family Foundation tell us “roughly half of Americans (49%) say racism is a big problem in today's society. That percentage is higher now than it was two decades ago, and marks a significant shift from four years ago when only a quarter of the people described racism that way.” Racism is at its all time high now and nobody's doing anything to try to stop it. Everyone is different and have different cultural values, but it does not make up the reasons for all the racism there is.
