"Is Renewable Energy An Economically Viable Option For South Africa"

1178 words - 5 pages

Renewable Energy is a source of energy that is not depleted by use, such as water, wind, or solar power. The world currently relies heavily on coal, oil and natural gases for its energy. Fossil fuels are non-renewable, they draw a finite resource that will eventually deplete, becoming too expensive and too environmentally damaging to retrieve. Although many renewable energy resources like wind and solar energy are constantly renewed and will never run out. South Africa has a large abundance of coal and get 77% of it energy through coal and the remaining 28% is exported around the world. These types of energy productions are useful in areas of low density because of the excessive cost of transporting electricity from big power plants. The use of Renewable energy technology has the potential to alleviate many of the problems that South Africans face everyday, especially if done so in a sustainable manner that prioritises human rights. Access to energy is essential for the reduction of poverty and the promotion of economic growth. Communication technologies, education, industrialisation, agriculture improvements and expansion of municipal water systems all require abundant, reliable and cost-effective energy access.

Due to the abundance of trash and rubbish in SA, South Africa has many opportunities to create renewable energy opportunities as the rubbish can be made into methane and numerous renewable energy plants and systems would need help, this means the creation of full time jobs and thus the economy going in the right direction for the future.

There are five types of renewable energy, wind power, solar power, biomass, geothermal energy and hydroelectric energy. I think that wind power, solar power and hydroelectric power can all be part of South Africa's future as our country has many opportunities for these kinds of energies. Wind power can easily solve many of our problems as it is one of the least expensive renewable energy sources and all it takes to create wind power is wind turbines and wind, which we have in high abundance in the Cape. Solar Energy is already being used in SA and although it is only being used on a small scale, it is already making a difference for people who use it as all it needs is solar panels on the roof of your house and sun so imagine how big of an impact it could have on our country on a large scale. Hydroelectric power is in my eyes the most suitable source of energy for South Africa as the main problem for making hydroelectricity is having to dam rivers but in our case we already have many big dams in our country and i think if we can install turbines by our dams, it might have a big dent in our spending budget but i think it will definitely benefit our economic state in the future. Many big countries use hydroelectricity for example the USA who receive 7% of their energy from hydroelectricity .
