Is Sunday The Sabbath? Essay

1320 words - 5 pages

Many sincere people believe that the Bible teaches that God changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. Sunday keeping was actually created by the man by the name Constantine. He was the first Roman Emperor to adopt Christianity. He changed the day of worship from God’s holy Sabbath day, Saturday, to Sunday. Constantine became a “Christian” after claiming to see in broad daylight a vision of a cross above the sun. He wanted to unite Christianity and paganism in an effort to strengthen his disintegrating empire. He knew that pagans throughout the empire worshiped the sun on the first day of the week. He developed a plan to unite both groups to be common platform of Sunday keeping. Constantine moved his capital from Rome to Constantinople and prepared the way for the Roman Catholic Popes to reign in Rome. As the Papal Church grew in power, it opposed Sabbath observance in favor of Sunday sacredness and made the day change official in the Council of Laodicea. Constantine's law had now been fully integrated into the Papal Church and the Sabbath was changed from Saturday to Sunday. (Pohlsander 55)
God predicted that this would happen, and it did. This error was passed onto our unsuspecting generation as gospel fact. The justification for Sunday worship cannot be found anywhere in the Bible, and is simply a synthetic tradition. Keeping Sunday breaks God’s law, which commands us to keep the seventh day holy, Saturday. Only God can make a holy day. Saturday is the Sabbath and people are being misled into thinking that the apostles did not worship on Saturday, the Sabbath was changed at Christ’s resurrection, and that 2 Corinthians 3:7 teaches that the law written and engraved in stone “was to be done away.” People should be informed about this misconception.
The belief that the Sabbath was changed to Sunday at Christ’s resurrection is erroneous. Christ expected His people to still be keeping the Sabbath in A.D. 70 when Jerusalem was destroyed. Knowing that Jerusalem would be destroyed by Rome, Jesus warned the disciples of that time by saying, “And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath” (Matthew 57). Jesus made it clear that He intended for the Sabbath to be kept. There is no record in the Bible that Jesus, His Father, or the apostles that says that the holy seventh day Sabbath was changed. The Bible never suggests that Sunday keeping was in honor of Christ’s resurrection, or for any other reason. We honor Him by obeying His Commandments and not by substituting it for another day that was created by man.
In the Bible is recorded that the women who came to anoint Christ’s dead body also kept the seventh day Sabbath. She prepared ointments and spices to anoint His body, and then she rested on the Sabbath day. She only came back to continue the sad work after the Sabbath day was over, on Sunday. The author of Acts, Luke, did not write about any changes being made to the day of worship. There are no biblical record of a change....
