Separating Seawater Through Desalination Essay

1003 words - 4 pages

Chemistry assignment:The mixture selected in this assignment is seawater obtained from the hydrosphere. The seawater can be separated through out several processes, both chemically and physically. The separation process is known as desalination. This name is getting more common everyday, as the Australian water demand grows with population we can no longer ignore the salinity problem. Desalination process could take use of the salt concentrated water, turning them into fresh water.Industrial Separation Procedure:1. The seawater is inputted through pre-treatment. During the physical separation process of pre-treatment it involves mostly of filtration (physical separation) removing larger solids in seawater.2. Next, when the water travels through a pipe, its ph rate has been adjusted, if the water is too acidic it can damage the membrane permanently, the cost for recovery is also very high.3. The filtered seawater now enters a pump, which compresses and puts pressure onto the filtered seawater. The high-pressure pump releases the seawater, sends it towards the RO (Reverse Osmosis) Membrane. (Physical pressure) The procedure is vital to the product freshwater, if the pressure is low, the salt cannot be fully separated from the water by the membrane, so the quality of the water really depends on the pressure applied when entering membrane.4. The RO Membrane is a semipermeable membrane that separates the salt particles from the water. The membrane also separates ions, large organics, bacteria and even small particles such as sodium, chlorine, calcium and magnesium. In reality usually around 1% of the salt does get through due to leaks or around seals. The water is not completely pure, but it is still drinkable in normal Australian standards. But if it is used for other industrial purposes, distillation of the water might be needed to guarantee security. The membrane removes as high as 99% of bacteria's and 90% of simple inorganic ions. (Physical separation, simple in applying pressure to seawater pushing the seawater through the membrane)5. The water is then near pure freshwater, passed to post treatment also known as stabilization. Where the water's pH levels are been change usually from around 5 to neutral, which is 7The separation method of desalination involves basic physical separation of applying pressure through membrane and filtration. There is other process of distillation, which involves high cost in energy usage (due to the fact that heat has to be constantly produced). It is not usually used for the desalination purpose in reality. There is no chemicals involve when separating the seawater apart from pH adjustments and when chemicals such as chlorine is used to clean the pipes, system etc. The properties of the mixture that allowed the physical separation include the pre-treatment filtration, where there is a difference in particle size E.g sand, metals, algae, smaller marine life and waterFrom the pressurized process, it uses to water's...

Desalination Essay

1450 words - 6 pages during the drought years from 1976-77. The adoption by Santa Barbara to ban the use of water for water the lawn for 14 months was brought forward by the six year drought of 1987-92. The city of Santa Barbara installed an emergency desalination plant to supply water to the rest of Santa Barbara County. Currently, California is going through the worst drought ever recorded in the state’s history. On January 17, 2014, Governor Jerry Brown declared a

Producing Drinking Water With Desalination Technology

1826 words - 7 pages Desalting refers to a water treatment process that removes salts from water. It is also called desalination or desalinization. Desalting can be done in a number of ways, but the result is always the same: drinking water is produced from brackish (somewhat salty) water or seawater. Desalting technologies can be used for a number of applications, but the purpose of this report is to discuss the use of desalting to produce drinking water from

The Pros and Cons of Using Groundwater

1010 words - 4 pages -rich buildup and downstream cropland are at a disadvantaged, and produces devastating downstream overflowing and possibility of malfunction (Miller & Johnson, 2010). Desalination involves eliminating salt from saltwater or seawater. The fundamental source of water for the earth is seawater and it cannot be used for domestic reasons or for drinking because of all the salt in the water. Reverse osmosis is a procedure whereas some force is

The Solution is the Sea

1858 words - 7 pages because of its extremely high salt content (all of the non-salty water has been removed). Not only does brine have more salt than natural seawater, it also commonly contains leftover chemicals and metals from the treatment process” (Francis). The chemicals and metals that are supposedly left over in the brine for the desalination process are chlorine, acid, products used for machinery upkeep, and heavy metals. The negative effect chlorine is said

Solutions to Sustain Freshwater

1889 words - 8 pages the water on earth is seawater, and other 3.5 percent of the dissolved solids that make it unusable for humans” (p.133). It is precisely true on the account of the fact that people have not taken any advantages of seawater so far except fishing. Probably 96.5 percent of all the water around the globe is in the form of seawater which is too saline to be consumed directly (Thompson, 1999). Seawater desalination is a good deal in response to making

Sudan´s Fresh Water Supply

1991 words - 8 pages desalination and ground water. Desalination involves the conversion of salt water from the sea to fresh water for consumption after passing it through a process. For the operation of desalination plant, a high amount of energy is required to operate and a huge amount of initial investment is needed for installation. Ground water on the other hand is generally waters extracted from the earth crust through the drilling of boreholes or wells and

Most developed countries have artificially overcome the unreliability of a continuous water supply through the building of various infrastructures such as desalination plants and dams (CSIRO , 2012). While these may assure for a reliable supply of water throughout the year

1026 words - 4 pages considered as a “solution” to the fresh water crisis. Desalination is the process which extracts the salt from seawater. Modern desalination projects use a method called “reverse osmosis,” which separates the salt from ocean water by pushing the water through a membrane at high pressures. The idea of desalination is not a new one; today, over 12,000 desalination plants operate around the globe . However, while the idea seems sound, the actual
