Issues With Gentically Modified Animals, Food And Organisms

Animals that have been genetically modified have adopted the name “pharm” animals. It is a mix between the word pharmaceutical and farm, and shows what the animals are used for. Such as the goat that was mentioned earlier, there are several other animals that are considered “pharm” animals. Many reporters, critics, and researchers alike all use this term to describe their dislike for the way that these animals are being used. “It is a mechanistic use of animals that seems to perpetuate the notion of their being merely tools for human use rather than sentient creatures.” A reporter from the Humane Society of the United States says in its position paper on the use of GM animals (Pollack). Critics and researchers ask: What makes these animals different from walking pharmacies that we use at our disposal?
The last con argument is the worry about the power in the market world that biotechnology companies will be receiving from the use of all these GM foods and organisms. Even in the past 10-15 years, the amount of acreage used for farming of GMOs has grown a considerably large amount. In 1997, it was estimated that there was an average of 4.2 million acres Globally, in 2013 there was an estimated 169 million acres Globally (Denault). And who would be benefiting? That’s right, biotechnology companies. The top biotechnology seed companies include Monsanto, DuPont/Pioneer Hi-Bred, Syngenta, Land O’Lakes, and Bayer. These companies control over 71 percent of the world’s seed market and account for an average of $50 billion per year in sales of seeds. Monsanto, a monopoly, owns over 27 percent of the worldwide seed market (Wohlers). With this much control, what is stopping them from raising prices to unseemly amounts, and causing farmers to find themselves in a logjam of debt.
Each argument has excellent points to them, however some of them are based off of fallacies, and it hinders their strength and weaknesses. The argument on GMOs genetically transferring their genetically enhanced abilities to weeds and creating “superweeds” has a weakness in its argument. The argument is mostly based on logos. George Erdosh’s standpoint, in his article “To GMO or NOT to GMO?”, is neither against or for the use of GMOs. Instead of a solid standpoint, George Erdosh gave points and arguments for both sides. His argument for “superweeds” is mostly based off of hypothesis, however the sequence of events seem logical. The same for Anton E. Wohlers’ article “Labeling of Genetically Modified Food”. He discusses the possibilities of “superweeds”, and backs up his accusation with a hypothetical situation and facts. There was a fallacy of appeal to tradition used in Anton E. Wohlers’ academic journal. He brought up the fact that people managed to live without GMOs, so why should they have to change their ways? Why fix something that isn’t broken?
