It's A Party, It's A Party, It's A Party

1099 words - 4 pages

Alcohol abuse is a major problem on most college campuses in America. Majority of college students might not think it is an enormous problem, but in fact it is: it is among one of the biggest problems that colleges and universities all across America face. For instance, speaking at the Senate Committee of Homeland and Government Affairs, Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut stated, “Alcohol abuse on college campuses has reached a point where it is far more destructive than most people realize and today threatens too many of our youth.” College students’ abuses of alcohol have an impact on their fellow students, campus, and the surrounding communities. Some consequences college students face for abusing alcohol includes death, academic obstacles, and unprotected sex. Nonetheless, colleges and societies can still do things to reduce the problem of student binge drinking.
One of the major effects of college alcohol abuse is a decline in academic performance. Every weekend, most college students nationwide forget about their studies and go out to drink. College students who habitually spend their free time partying and drinking will often see a drop in their grades. According to a study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), “25 percent of college student … miss class, do poorly on exams or paper, and receive lower grade overall” as a result of their alcohol abuse (Wechsler et al., 1994, 2002). For example, if a student is suffering from a hangover, they are more likely to miss class, consequential in failing grades. Additionally, “there is some evidence that chronic drinkers have a hard time keeping their attention focused and maintaining their concentration” (Stonehill College, 2011). Learning is a mental process and an alert mind is needed, but if one has a hangover, he or she will have a reduced alertness. This results in someone not being able to remember what they learnt a couple of hours ago. (Stonehill College)
Another problem college student’s face due to alcohol abuse is the engagement in inadvertent and unprotected sexual activities. According to Antonia Abbey, Ph.D. Department of Community Medicine, Wayne State University, “Alcohol-related sexual assault is a common occurrence on college campuses” (Abbey et al., 2005). Binge drinking on college campuses can lead to sexual assault regardless of whether it is the victim or wrongdoer that has been drinking. For instance, a drunken male student will probably focus more on his sexual stimulation and sense of privilege rather than the potential agony and misery his victim will face. Similarly, a female that has been binge drinking is at an increased risk of being taken advantage of. Furthermore, when students consume large quantities of alcohol, they are more likely to engage in casual sex without prior discussions of the risks involved. The consumption of large quantities of alcohol might impair the communication channel between the involved parties which results...
