“It is still killing,” These are the words of Dr. Margaret Chan, the head of the World Health Organization; The wing of the United Nations tasked with directing and coordinating on international health work. - Dr. Chan made this comment during a recent televised trip to the east African country of Ethiopia where there has been an increase in the Malaria infection rate. It is estimated that 300 million people are affected by malaria, and also less than one percent of the 300 million affected people die, there are still an estimated 1.5 million deaths recorded per year. The liver cells burst, releasing the parasites back into the bloodstream where they then use their surface receptor proteins to enter red blood cells. Here, the Plasmodium parasite feeds on hemoglobin and reproduces again by asexual reproduction. After a period of usually 4 weeks, the red blood cells burst and release the parasites, and then the matured parasite cells are free to invade and infect more red blood cells.
At this point the infected person is then referred to as a host of the plasmodium. When a mosquito bites an infected person, it picks up the sexual forms of the parasite. Here, these develop in the stomach of the Anopheles mosquito completing the parasite’s life cycle (Herman, 1997). Malaria causes symptoms that are typically similar to that of a normal cold. These include fever and headache. Unlike the common cold, the symptoms can often lead to coma or death. The disease is most widespread in tropical and subtropical regions near the equator, which includes much of Asia, the America’s and Sub-Saharan Africa. (Fagan 2000)
