Jennifer Rosenberg on about.com (n.d.), had stated, “On July 254, 1978, Louise Joy Brown, the world’s first successful ‘test-tube’ baby was born in Great Britain.” This was advancement in the medical history for women everywhere who had difficulty getting pregnant; this medical breakthrough, known as In-vitro fertilization, or IVF, since Louise Joy Brown’s birth had only grown in ease and the amount of people that use this technology is at an all-time high. Ed Matayka and his wife, Sgt. Karen Matayka (2013), Staff Sargent Matayka had been gravely injured during a tour in Afghanistan, losing both of his legs above the knee, spinal injuries in two places, and brain trauma. Because of this incident, after Staff Sargent’s recovery, leaving him without his legs and a partly paralyzed arm, the two sought out fertility treatment, something that Tricare, their insurance, did not cover. The two had pressed on, and Sargent Karen Matayka had gotten pregnant with twin boys. Their struggle was a start; people now are able to have children despite a physical disability such the loss of their legs and spinal injuries. Couples can use IVF to have children of their own, even if their spouse is wheelchair bound or bed bound.
In-vitro fertilization is not only for the physically impared, it is for couples and people who can not have children by their own means, such as homosexual couples or single men and women that want children of their own without having a spouse. People in this situation can use in-vitro so they can have their own biological children through donated sperm and embryos. While for women it is an easier procedure, using their own embryos to be implanted after being fertilized. Men would have to go through the means of a surrogate, a woman who would carry their child to term for them; this process is much more expensive. By using in-vitro fertilization it makes things much easier for the individuals having a child, with less difficulty that comes with adoption.
There are other forms of in-vitro, which may seem like it should not be allowed. Sometimes during service, or just on a typical day, people die, in the case of IVF, men. Their parents or significant other can make a choice to use in-vitro from their body. On Time.com, Bonnie Rochman (2011), had an article called: Should Men Be Allowed to father Children After They’re Dead? In this she asked if it should be allowed if women have the rights to have their spouse donate sperm for in-vitro, even if they are dead. Bonnie Rochman (2011) also continues on about how parent of a single man, with no girlfriend, no wife, no significant other, was able to make the decision to take their son’s sperm and use it so they would be able to have grandchildren, asked that “If we were entitled to donate the organs of our son why are we not entitled to make use of his sperm in order to bring offspring to the world?” It is of a personal decision between these families, and couples and even parents of a deceased...
