Research Paper Draft
My plan is to become a computer software engineer, but I never thought that I would be interning at a school. My internship is a Blackshear Elementary, a low performing school. Working with pre-kinder students hasn’t changed my mind on my future occupations, I still want to become an engineer, but I would like to do more for the struggling schools in the community. A lot of the children are not learning as much because many of their parents are not working with them at home. I learned that it’s not the teacher’s fault as much as it’s the parents.
My partners and I are working on trying to create a field day for the students. Many of these students are very unhealthy and also need a break from all that they are doing and learning in school. We would like have food, drinks, bouncing houses, and also many different stations for the children. We are going to get as many donations as we can to make this special event happen. It’s going to be hard for this event to be accomplished only because Blackshear is a low performing school. But it could also go well because they are a low performing school, being a low performing school could possibly make it easier. Being at a low performing school would make companies want to donate more.
Many of the kids go under a lot of stress, since most of them come from a bad lifestyles they go through many obstacles just at a young age. Many of the students who go there are on government assistance, and can’t even afford the smallest of thing. Also many are on government assistances and the parents aren’t doing anything to help their children, many still come to school hungry. Many of them also just eat junk food, not a real meal, so they may not be fat, but also unhealthy. Many parents aren’t working and still not doing anything to help them with their education nor their health.
Since their parents aren’t helping them much on them much at home with their education, the teachers have to cram as much as they can in one day. If they don’t go over ever subject each day the children will not remember, nor will they pass their exit level exams. With all this everyone is under a lot of stress in this situation. Since they are a low performing school the kindergarten students are not allowed to take a nap nor allowed to go out for recess.
Many children are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol and or high blood pressure. Out of 5- to 17-year-olds, 70% of them had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Obese young adults are more likely to have prediabetes, a condition in which glucose levels indicate a high risk for development for diabetes. Also children and young adults, who are obese, have a greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization - a mental or physical mark that is characteristic of a defect or disease - and poor self-esteem.
