Jean Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory
Jean Piaget was born in Neuchatel, Switzerland on August 9, 1896. He is the oldest child of Rebecca Jackson and Arthur Piaget. His father was a professor of medieval literature and showed great dedication to his studies, which was a trait that caught the attention of Mr. Piaget. At age ten Jean Piaget showed a great interest in mollusks that he began going to his local museum of natural history and he would spend hours exploring. When Jean Piaget was eleven years old, he attended Neuchatel Latin High School where, he wrote his first scientific paper on albino sparrow. The first stage, which is the sensorimotor stage begins at birth and continues through age two. In this stage infants know only a limited amount of knowledge and they only know about what’s directly in front of them. This stage can be separated into six substages. Reflexes substage begins at birth through 1 month olds and this is when the infant only understands it’s surroundings by reflexes such as sucking and looking. The next substage known as the primary circular reactions continues with one month old through four month old infants and at this stage the infant is a bit more aware of it’s environment and enjoys repeating actions to make sure of the end results. Secondary circular reactions occurs to four month olds and continues through eight month olds, not much has changed in this stage and the only thing that changes in the child is that it does things with more of a purpose to trigger it’s environment. After that comes the Coordination of reactions which affects eight to twelve month olds and in this substage the child will try to explore his or her environment and will imitate others behaviors. Tertiary occurs in infants ages twelve to eighteen months and the infant will try to make sound or act a certain way to get the attention of others around him or her. The last and final substage is the early representational thought that affects children that are eighteen months old to twenty four months old. After the infant exploring it’s environment for a while the child has now been able to use images to represent certain objects.
