Journal Essay

815 words - 4 pages

The Saturday classes were also very interesting and I felt less theoretical and more practical in relating to the project. I was particularly interested in hearing about the different types of culture in the various big multinational companies in Ireland and how they affect their employees. | am listening to an audio book at the moment called the advantage by Lencioni and it is all about organisational health and “why it trumps everything else in busisness” We were looking at organisational cultures and how to diagnose them. Looking back this was one of the most interesting talks for me as I have ben involved in charity work for years and trying to develop and implement cultural change. The diagram of competing values was very revealing as I recognised my strengths and weaknesses when looking at it and I could understand better how various values compete and cancel out each other. Looking back now on various experiences I have had I can understand why certain cultures are strong in one area but at the same time have weakened other areas, for example why control in management kills creativity in staff and why competition kills collaboration. I had understood these values in isolation but it was only when I saw this diagram that I understood their inter relationship and how there is a trade off on each opposite value-pair. I wish I had learned this earlier as it would have saved me a lot of difficulties in practice. Another interesting qwas the framework of values for an organisation. And I was surprised to see the iceberg diagram and I am very used to this setting but in a different seting. I have been involved in councelling and I have seen the iceberg diagram in terms of the individual with the viable part being the visable behaviours and then below the waterline the sttitudes, beliefs, values, and identity. With each one being more inbuilt and sunconscious. I had not seen this model being employes to look at the culture of an organisation as a whole but ic an see the similarities and reasons not. Again this was another connection I had not made before. It also echoes in some way the Ontological position, the resulting epistemological approach and the methodological result. If we want real change in a person or a body or culture of people we must deal below the surface...
