Bhimji and Shaikh state “Arteriosclerosis often does not cause symptoms until the lumen of the affected area is critically narrowed or totally blocked” (3). Having high cholesterol and high blood pressure because of fast food can make someone more susceptible to atherosclerosis or even heart disease. The blocked arteries and leading to the heart, will continue to get worse if someone has diabetes, obesity, and lives a sedentary lifestyle. This disease is the number one killer and causes half of all mortalities in the U.S and developed countries. All in all, how we eat defines our health.
Fast food is popular among our nation. Eric Schlosser believes fast food restaurants are popular because “It’s easy, it’s filling and it’s convenient, and inexpensive” (parag. 4). This means paying less is always good because in the end you saved money compared to what you could of paid for. Middle class families don’t want to spend big sum of money when they could go to the a local fast food place such as McDonald’s. Another way to pull in customers is to produce a child-friendly atmosphere along with playgrounds and toys. Low prices and child-friendly atmosphere are always going to attract people no matter what. Working people want somewhere to eat that they can get a quick-meal. A quick meal consists of not going into the restaurant using a drive thru window. According to Jaxx Xaxx, The fast food industry has grown because of it’s “efficiency, speed, location, and branding”(1). This means that the efficiency at fast food restaurants are important because they decrease their amount of food waste, and they hire people for minimum wage. Speed is the main reason why customers order fast food, because people want to eat as quick as possible and most customers end up heading to the drive-thru for even quicker service. Branding of the restaurant is important because it makes you hungry, even when you're not. Companies make sure they advertise their products and logo on billboards, commercials, and radio stations. Location is about convenience, and having a restaurant in a busy traffic area. Sara Ipatenco believes stopping by a fast food restaurant to please a whining child means, “You have witnessed one of the strongest marketing tools these companies use“ (parag. 1). Toys, well-known characters and fun have kept kids begging for decades. Fast food companies started to notice and place toys for both genders in kid’s meals. Well-known characters in commercials and on packaging pull kids in because they are colorful and recognizable. Playgrounds, televisions and dressed up characters help increase marketing. To sum up, it is proven that the popularity of fast food, not only is it a problem but one of society as well.
The environment is affected by the fast food industry. Koa Halpern indicates “The process depletes our natural resources as well as the air-giving trees.” (parag. 8). The types of materials fast food restaurants use are styrofoam, plastic, paper, and...
