Juliet's State Of Mind Essay

1025 words - 5 pages

Juliet’s love and loyalty towards Romeo, and her developing character do not only play an important role in motivating her in speaking the lines that she does, but also in motivating her actions. Despite all the current events that have occurred; events that have affected her state of mind, Juliet decides to remain true and faithful to Romeo.
Juliet’s state of mind at this point in the play definitely revolves around this idea of light vs. dark – her fears and hopes. After hearing about the loss of her cousin, Tybalt, she faces the obstacle in which she is forced to choose which path to take. Friar Lawrence gives Juliet the opportunity to run away with Romeo, but in order to ...view middle of the document...

In earlier events, Juliet wished for the night; the night was a time of love and intimacy for the two lovers. The night was portrayed as holy and sacred, a shelter or veil that protected the two from the threatening light of day. Shakespeare’s use of symbolism assists in conveying this idea of love and purity. However, this pure representation of night is contradicted when Juliet fears of being trapped within the ‘horrible conceit of death and night” (IV, iv, 24). The irony that Shakespeare uses to illustrate Juliet’s state of mind demonstrates her still developing character as she is conflicted between the concept of betraying for family and death itself. At this point in the play, from Juliet’s ponders and contradictory, the audience is able to conclude that she is very much torn and indecisive of her motives.
This soliloquy depicts Juliet’s emotions in the way that reveals her flourishing love for Romeo even if it means her possible demise. The images that begin to grow in Juliet’s mind represents her overwhelm of fear. Shakespeare’s use of imagery and repetition regarding evil and terror emphasizes this concept of Juliet’s hysterical state of mind. The aspect of repetition also reveals the wandering emotions that Juliet has for Tybalt, her close cousin, in which Romeo did murder. Juliet’s distress begin to consume every ounce of her sanity as she worries of being buried alive and waking up before she is meant to. Her anxiety of so early waking and “pluck[ing] the mangled Tybalt from his shroud” indirectly expresses her emotions of guilt and sorrow for the death of her cousin (IV, iv, 39). The many references to Tybalt, such as when Juliet claims that she sees her “cousin’s ghost seeking out Romeo” reveals her growing shame that she possesses for both Romeo and Tybalt. (IV, iv, 42). From Juliet’s worries and Shakespeare’s interpretations of her state of mind, the audience can quickly notice that Juliet is irrational and uncertain of her options.
