Youth sports in America is a major part to keeping our youth active and out of trouble. Each of the youth sports available today are extraordinary options for children today. However, one sport above all really stands out to me, even if it isn’t my favorite. The sport that stands out above all the rest is youth basketball. It is an extremely fun sport that can be played in organization indoor and also for fun outdoor. It is a very memorable sport and allows youth to excel in the sport in many different areas and not just one. In youth basketball you not only have to be able to dribble and shoot, but also, you must be able to pass and play defense as well. Youth basketball is the total package.
Basketball has been around since the late 1800s. However, a youth basketball organization did not come around until almost a full century later. The Amateur Athletic Union started a youth basketball organization in the early 1980s. “By 1989, the AAU had 13 age group national championships in youth basketball.” (AAU) This organization put basketball on the rise for youth sports. The youth sport has sky-rocketed with “26.2 million children ages 6 and older played basketball in 2008.”(SBJ) These are huge numbers! According to staticbrain.com, there are a total of 35 million athletes ages form 5-18, which means more than half are playing basketball.(staticbrain) There must be a reason for this many youth athletes choosing this sport over others.

Allowing more players to participate in youth basketball allows the sport to expand when the season is played. Basketball is played year round. This is a great opportunity for kids to stay focused on one sport. Another great thing about youth basketball is that it is played indoors. Unlike baseball, lacrosse, football, soccer, and softball, basketball games are never canceled due to weather. Youth athletes never have to adjust their schedule because of a game being cancelled which eliminates stress on a child.
One of the most positive things about youth basketball is that it is available to both male and female. Finally there is a sport that is not only played by men. Women finally have the opportunity to be incorporated in the sport and show off their skills as well. In many youth basketball associations, they even have co-ed leagues for boys and girls to be on the same team and compete together. This is something that no other major sport like football or baseball can say other than soccer. An advantage in youth basketball is that there are no limitations on...
