There has already been some knowledge that people once believed in, but then someone discovered new information that contradicted the previous knowledge everyone thought was true. In this essay I will consider some knowledge issues considering the view of two different areas of knowledge, which I chose natural science and religion. The purpose of this essay is to distinguish between different accepted knowledge, and to investigate why some knowledge is discarded after finding something that contradicts the knowledge. This is my attempt to get closer to the answer. The topic is really big, therefor I will try to have my arguments for both parts and be open minded. My main knowledge issues are “how can we know if the knowledge about something is reliable or not?” and “Is the new knowledge always closer to the truth than the old one?”
Knowledge is defined as the state or fact of knowing through experience or study (The Free Dictionary). According to natural sciences the word scientific knowledge is fact and phenomenon that is acquired through a scientific method. There are four factors that can classify if the information is a scientific knowledge: Independent and rigorous testing, peer review and publication, measurement of actual or potential rate of error, and degree of acceptance within the scientific community. Religious people think that knowledge is considered to be one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, knowing what is good or evil. The knowledge they get is obtained from scriptures, such as the Bible.
Natural science is developing at a fast rate every day, the scientists makes new discoveries which leads to new information that may prove some theories to be incorrect or modify some of the information that they already have obtained through the existing information. For example in the past, people believed that the continents were immovable, but it was proved to be wrong since the continents have drifted apart. The idea was first put up by Abraham Ortelius in 1596, but was further developed by Alfred Wegener in 1912. The theory was then supported by the theory plate tectonics that explained how the continents could move.
Religion is very difficult to change, because people believe in what is said to be correct or right according to their religious scriptures, but there has been some misunderstanding and the interpretation of what is read. Religion is all about different interpretation. It’s hard to talk about one correct interpretation of a religion. For example “you shall not lie with a male as with a woman, it’s an abomination.” Could be interpreted as being homosexual is a sin, or that it’s trying to prohibit the way the Jewish male society tried to show dominance through anal intercourses with the enemy. It does not imply to not having sexual relationships with the same gender. Another example is that in Christianity they used to believe that there were seven heavens, where one was physically above the other where God was...
