Laptops In The Classroom Essay

2185 words - 9 pages

The development of technology in this country has been significant to the daily lives of Americans today. In the twenty-first century, one of the greatest accomplishments of technology is the use of laptops. People, such as students, are facing the fact that laptops have made their lives easier. Some colleges and universities have allowed that each student bring their personal laptops with internet connectivity to class while others believe they easily weaken the learning abilities of students instead of promoting and increasing learning in the classroom. Although personal laptops in the classroom have numerous advantages, there have also been frequent complaints from professors because laptops hinder with learning, and as a result should be banned from bringing them into the classroom since laptops can easily distract students, not every student can afford purchasing a laptop, and would prevent students from cheating or plagiarizing.
Older generations would tell stories about how the technology one now has, did not exist in their days. Currently, it is something one cannot live without; especially for students who use their laptops for registering online for classes, written assignments, taking notes in Word documents, doing researches now that databases and libraries are available online, and viewing the PowerPoint slides along with the professor when he is lecturing. Because personal laptops are not being monitored, professors have little control of what a student is doing on their laptops while sitting in his or her classroom. An article by Carrie B. Fried entitled, In-Class Laptop Use and Its Effects on Student Learning, she stated that out of the participating surveyors that she surveyed, “64.3% reported using their laptops in at least one class period” (910). Fried also stated, “81% reported that they checked email during the lectures, 68% reported that they used instant messaging, 43% reported surfing the net, 25% reported playing games, and 35% reported doing “other” activities” (910). This survey validates the reason why laptops should be banned in the classroom since students are not able to focus on learning if they are on their laptops surfing the Internet, checking their e-mails, visiting social websites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, or even playing games. Those who sit behind the students with laptops that are trying to pay attention and take notes may find their eyes drawn to the monitors in front of them due to the flashing advertisement lights and keyboard noises they hear that diverts their attention from what the professor is trying to teach. Not only are laptops distracting their owners and classmates, they are also distracting the professors. With all of this technology, here lies the challenge for the professors because it is anticipated that having laptops in the classroom will expand teaching and learning; on the other hand, teachers are left with the task of incorporating the electronic devices into the day’s...
