Final essay 1
I am the owner and operator of a small bagel shop with a small staff that are like family. With the holidays coming up I need everybody to be at their best for the increased demand. This morning, two of my employees got into an argument. Because I am a small business I can only afford a small staff and I have a very busy schedule so I can’t spend too much time solving the issue. I would spend 15 minutes talking to each of them separately to discover the cause of the issue and see if the issue can be resolved quickly. With the holiday season fast approaching I can’t spend a lot of time searching for new employees so it would be best to find a solution that does not involve firing them.
After talking with the two employees, in a best case scenario, I would be able to get the employees to resolve the issue or at least come to an understanding. If a solution cannot be reached then I would make them work in different areas, one work in the back or at the front of the counter line, the other at the cash register. If they still can’t settle their argument after three days I would have to begin looking for a replacement in the worst case scenario. Another issue that I am aware of is the potential impact of the argument on the rest of the staff, if I just let it be more staff members could get swept up into the issue, or they may be discouraged if I fired the two staff involved in the argument.
My conversation with them would be similar to what follows, in this scenario worker Bob will be the problem maker, and worker Joe will be the victim. I first pull Bob aside before the bagel shop opens and get his side. The conversation with Joe happens later and would be similar to the conversation with Bob.
Me: “Bob can you come with me to the back, I saw your argument with Joe and I would like to hear from you what happened.”
Bob: “Well I was talking with Kim[another employee] when Joe walks in late and interrupts our conversation and starts talking to her while standing in front of me, blocking me out. So I told him to move out the way and that I was in the middle of talking to her. He then turned around and mocked me and told me that he was almost done.”
Me: “Do you think this may have just been a misunderstanding, maybe he just didn’t see you or know you were talking with her?”
Bob: “This isn’t the first time he has done this though and it really makes me angry.”
Me: “Well I...
