Russia is the largest country in the world. They have been around for a very long time and over came some very tragic event in its history. Some of the tragic events that have occurred in their history has to do with their agriculture. One would think that since they are the biggest country in the world, being about 6,600,000 square miles in total area and stretching from across Asia and some parts of Europe, that their country being so big would have some areas where agriculture can flourish. Being where the country is located and other issues is the reason why they've had a hard time to advance in this segment.
Russian in located on the northern hemisphere, very close to the North Pole. Since the country boundary is mainly covered by the Arctic Ocean, most of Russia has a humid climate. Since the country is so big, it does have different climates throughout the region. Most of Russia has every cold temperatures with snow covering the areas throughout the year, also called subarctic climate. It is not like this all over Russia, there are certain sections of Russia that has much warmer climates where snow rarely falls. Since in this kind of climate it tends to have very low temperatures and snow fall, it tends to kill most of its crops. Since Russia has a big population, there have been times the country has had a hard time feeding the people. Although there are areas that have much warm climate suited for growing crops, those areas are too far from its population in the European side. Also since there is mainly no development in between both sides of the country, it would make it very difficult to transport not only the crops but also the equipment required to produce such products. Even if such feat were to be done by the Russians, its great distance would make the crops very expensive to buy because of transportation cost.
