Great successful leaders can easily influence others. They use their qualities and skills to inspire a workforce, a team, or even a nation in order to achieve their goals. Leaders can see beyond themselves and beyond the tasks, utilizing their strengths and the strengths of others. Effective leaders can manage relationships with others and create positive outcomes. Winston Churchill is a good example of one of the greatest leaders in history. His ability to mobilize and strengthen his people through words and policies was phenomenal. Another attribute as a leader was not only inspiring people but he also demonstrated enthusiasm and determination.

The problem is that not many of today’s leaders are adapting to change. The command and control that the leaders once used are no longer appropriate when leading teams. Now they have to learn new skills such as patiently sharing information, being able to trust others and to give up authority, and understand when to intervene.
Lewin developed three major leadership styles that provide a foundation to become a more effective leader. These three leadership styles include; autocratic leaders, democratic leaders and laissez-faire. Autocratic leaders centralizes authority, dictate work methods, and limit employee participation. (DeCenzo, 8th Edition) However, this style can lower morale and it can lead to high levels of staff turnover. Democratic leaders tend to involve its subordinates in decision-making, delegating authority; it encourages participation in deciding certain work methods, goals, and it welcomes feedback as an opportunity to train its employees. (DeCenzo, 8th Edition) As a result, team members tend to have high job satisfaction and high productivity. This style is important when your team agrees, but it can be difficult to manage when your subordinates have different perspectives and ideas. Last, laissez-faire leaders generally give his or her employees complete freedom to make decisions and to complete their work in whatever way they see fit. (DeCenzo, 8th Edition) This can lead to high job satisfaction, but it can be damaging if its subordinates do not have good time management skills, or any knowledge and self-motivation to do their work effectively. Laissez-faire leadership can occur when managers lose control over their work and its subordinates. That type of behavior will arise because the leader is lazy or distracted, and this where this style of leadership can fail.
