“Leadership is reciprocal and purposeful learning in a community” with opportunities for skillful participation (Lambert). Humanistic Approach and perspectives consider the leaders’ ability to personalize their experience to the individual; Similar to “modeling of leadership behaviors” (Lambert). If we want others to be leaders, we need to demonstrate what leadership looks - like according to Lambert. Whether teaching or leading the activity of coaching, scaffolding, articulation, reflection, and exploration are key components to development.
Overall, leadership believes in dynamic engagement for collaboration and driven outcomes. Many may not acknowledge that leadership attributes can be displayed within all roles without regard to their working title. As a result, surveying the communities within Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) – Cabinet, Classified, Student Government Association, and Academic Divisions - provides the best comparison of capacity between leadership’s innate, strategically planned, or by chance when opportunity knocks.
The population parameters in the counties served by HACC lacks ethnicity to create a dynamic community that are representative of the student population to create an unbiased outcome. HACC has a total employment population of 2, 130. In turn, personnel serves 11% percent African American, 4% American Indian, 3% Asian, 69% Caucasian, 9% Hispanic, 2% Non-resident alien, 2% Two or more race and 4% Unknown. Meanwhile, HACC’s personnel represents 88% Caucasian, 2% Hispanic, 4% Black, and 5 % Asian with no significant correlation in American Indian or Pacific Islander. The Board of Trustees, Cabinet, Professional, Classified, and Student Government Association representation depict the chart above.
The following groups were engaged electronically, followed by the request to interview 1:1 to complete the school or staff survey. I was able to secure 8 direct 1:1 interviews to collect information on leadership capacity by using the following questions: (1) What personal beliefs/values concerning leadership motivate you to lead, (2) What is your style of leadership, (3) Was your leadership innate, result of crisis, or strategic choice, (4) What traits distinguish you from other leaders, (5) What do respected leaders concentrate on, and (6) What comes to mind when asked what will happen if you make a mistake. The Leadership Staff Capacity Survey was circulated to classified, SGA and APO personnel. The Leadership Capacity School Survey was given to Cabinet, Faculty, and Deans. I was able to capture 21 electronic surveys that where answered in totality. I spent > 25 hours developing, and gathering significant data for 29 participants.
