Leadership In Management Essay

Leadership and management are two ideas that are often used to describe the same concept, but often confused. However, these words actually describe two different concepts. Leadership is just one of the many skills a successful manager must possess. A manager cannot just be an effective leader without training. Managers do things by the book and follow company policy, while leaders follow their own intuition, which may in turn be of more benefit to the company. A leader is usually defined by being more emotional than a manager. Leadership promotes new directions while management executes existing directions as efficiently as possible. A leader is someone who people naturally follow through their own choice, whereas a manager must be obeyed. It is very possible for a manager to have obtained their position of authority through time and loyalty given to an organization, not as a result of their leadership qualities. A leader can be a new face in the organization that has new ideas but might not have experience or wisdom of a seasoned veteran.Management usually consists of people who are experienced in their field, and who have worked their way up the company. A manager knows how each layer of the system works and may also possess a good technical knowledge. The best managers are very strategic about themselves. They recognize that time and other resources are scarce, that competitive pressures demand efficient use of everything. Being strategic about themselves is the same thing as being a proactive, studious investor who regularly monitors their or her investments in order to shift them around to get a better return. Managers also have to be strategic about the business. It is not enough to do the work efficiently, it is essential to do the right things. Both of these imperatives can be thought of in terms of wise investment. Management is primarily a decision making role. Management focuses on the entire organization from both a short and a long-term perspective. Management is the managerial process of forming a strategic vision, setting objectives, crafting a strategy and then implementing and executing the strategy. Management goes beyond the organization's internal operations to include the industry and the general environment. Managers are paid to get things done, often within strict limitations of time and money. The key emphasis is on issues related to environmental scanning and industry analysis, appraisal of current and future competitors, assessment of core competencies, strategic control and the effective allocation of organizational resources. (McCrimmon, 2007)Leaders must have a wide range of skills, techniques and strategies in order to be effective. These include planning, organization, and communication skills.
