“Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things” (Peter F. Drucker). This is a famous quote about leadership that myself and one of my interviewees agree on. I chose to interview two leaders about their role in leadership and their opinions of gender in the workplace. The two people I chose to interview are very genuine individuals who have been leaders in their work for years. The first one is David Lanzon. He currently owns several local small businesses around Metro Detroit and the Maumee Ohio area, leading hundreds of employees. I know him from when I worked at one particular location that he owns. Are they the type of person who respects their employees and cares for them or do they just look at them as employees? I asked both to define effective leadership. Mr. Lanzon answered, “Effective leadership involves taking on roles that involve a vast amount of responsibilities, criticism, and adaptability. You also need to be able to lead in a manner where your followers can look up to you and you must enable a desirable environment of work.” Virginia responded with, “Effective leadership is difficult to explain. It’s different for everyone. Effective is when you can multitask and handle many different problems at one time. Leadership comes from somebody who can communicate and get along with everybody from upper management to the customers. Put the two together, and you have Effective Leadership.” While both of my interviewees provided good insight, I could tell that they differed. They both managed their companies in two very different time periods so things have been different for each one of them. They both, however, try to treat all of their employees and customers with as much respect as they deserve.
