Leadership Philosophy Paper

1589 words - 7 pages

A leader is someone who can stand up for what they believe in and start a movement to change their society around them. It sounds too simple. However, is that all it takes? Being a leader requires more than words and a simple action, it starts with a passion that fires you up. A fire, that gives you strength to make monumental statements that could easily imprint someone’s life. It takes a kind heart that is willing to endure obstacles, jump through hoops, and yet at the end of the day, still have the strength to encourage and love their followers. One person we all know very well who shows outstanding heart and courage was Martin Luther King Jr. He had a passion, a dream for equality. He fought fiercely, yet never committed an act of violence. Instead, he stood firm by his beliefs, encouraged his followers, and persevered to victory. His leadership led to one of the most radical social reform America had seen yet. That is a leader we can all relate to. For me, and on a more personal level, my college intern, Chris, at my church really showed me what it means to be a true leader. He was nothing but kind hearted and never had anything negative to say. He would not only tell me and show me how to make it through life, but Chris lived out what he preached. Never was there a moment when his fire dimmed or he didn’t have strength to lead yet he remained strong through his trials and was always there to lead me through mine. He would always tell me “I’ve been there, I know what it feels like.” He was my Leader, and I was his follower. Leadership isn’t for anyone; It takes a man’s or women’s strength to find that passion and with courage, flexibility and unselfish desires, they can change the lives around them and the world they live in.
Having these leadership qualities is not something you’re just born with. We learn and grow through our experiences and observation of other leaders. We develop strengths but always we lack in other areas, which become our weaknesses. Curious, I want to see my strengths and weakness so I took a strength aptitude test. It recorded my top five, in order: strengths are self-motivation, Faith, ambition, purpose, and resourcefulness. (Richard N. Stephenson) I truly believe this is accurate, because I always stress that you need passion before anything. You have to be motivated to lead and the desire to lead. With that being said, having faith and confidence, in all that I do, is important to me. I believe you should be confident in order to face the world. It is important to believe in yourself. I have always thought my number one trait was ambition. I have notice that I have a drive that is near invisible to kill. When I set my mind to it, I don’t deviate from my path to obtain my goal. Sometimes these traits work against me like when I think I am right about something but I’m actually not. I’ll still argue even if I know I can win. In those cases I embarrass myself. That leads to my weakness: communication. (Richard N....
