Have you ever heard the phrase Are you a left brain or right brain thinker? This phrase has been thrown around for centuries. The brain in divided down the middle, in two hemispheres, with each side performing different operations. So, in theory, each side of your brain control different types of thinking, one person may prefer one type of thinking over another. Different sides of the brain also controls our senses, touch, smell, vision, and hearing.
Most of what is known today about brain function is credited to Roger Sperry, who was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1981. He experimented with the way the human brain’s hemispheres operate both independently and together. (Melina, 2011). The right ...view middle of the document...

The left brain and the right brain controls different things. For example the left brain is said to be more logical, analytical, and objective, where the right is said to be more intuitive, thoughtful, and subjective. (Cherry, 2014). The left side of the brain thinking is more linear and the right side is more mosaic. The left side likes rules, facts, certainty, reality, practicality and security, where the right side creates its own reality. (Kay, 2003, p. 36).
How we speak or sound is controlled by different sides of our brains, for example the left side specializes in picking out the sounds that form the words where as for the right side is more sensible to the emotional features of the language. (Cherry, 2014). Research shows that when both sides of the brain works together, you will have a better outcome, and that both sides work together to perform a wide variety of tasks.
Even though some people may think they are either left brain or right brain most are a mix of both. “Research has shown that abilities in subjects such as math, are actually strongest when both halves of the brain work together” (Cherry, 2014).
As for students and whether they are left brained or right brained dominant. It is said that students who prefer to work alone are considered left brained, and students who prefer to work in groups are right brain dominant. Left brain students also like a quiet area to work and read independently and incorporate research into their work. Right Brain students would rather make models, then to write papers. (Connell, 2014). Left brain learners like step-by-step format beginning with details leading to an understanding. Right Brain learner likes to begin with the concept and moving on to the specifics. All people think and learn in different ways, some need more help than others. The brain carefully balances and controls certain functions for each side of the brain, its nature’s way of ensuring that the brain ultimately splits up the task to maximize efficiency.
