Let it pour: A critical thinking case studyThe setting takes place at Faith medical hospital. On the back of everyone's business card at Faith it states "With the foundation and commitment of our spiritual heritage and values, our mission is to promote the health and well-being of the people in the communities we serve through a comprehensive continuum of services provided in collaboration with the partners who share the same vision and values". It sounds great but things aren't working out that way at faith. This analysis will address the different situations facing the management staff at the hospital and what actions should be taken to address the problems. When addressing these issues the analysis will also tackle the organizational processes, ethical issues, and the communications systems utilized by the hospital staff. There is a wide spectrum of issues that is keeping the hospital from running smoothly and efficiently. All of these issues range from ethical dilemmas, to personal feelings, to monetary situations, to personal rights. The first issue I'd like to discuss is the employee's inability to view situation in the same scope. In the case study "let it pour" it stated that lots of the personnel treat patients differently, in this case I'm talking about the don not resuscitate (DNR) procedure. They had three cases, in one case nurses followed DNR with no written agreement; in the next case they there were people in the same situation but they feel that they must "do all they can" to save the patient, and in the last case a nurse didn't follow DNR even though paper work was in place. The second major concern that the hospital faces is the high cost of operations combined with a drop in the number of patients. Cut backs may be in order and the CEO doesn't really know where to cut from. If money is not saved immediately the hospital could go under. Even though the hospital is a no profit organization, it still cost lots of money to threat patients and pay employees. The third problem is the collaboration between insurance companies and the hospital. In some cases the insurance won't cover the patient after care and the end result is the hospital taking the blow. The main frustration in this situation is that faith wants to provide the best care possible but at the same time they risk not getting paid. Insurance claims can be very sketchy; I know this from personal experience.There are a variety of alternatives that can used to stop the abuses currently at the hospital. Before the alternatives are put into place, it is important that the decision makers use a systematic approach to problem solving. The first part of the systematic approach is to analyze and state the current problems (McCall, 1990); In this case the problems are already stated by the CEO of the company.
