In 1957, Li-Young Lee was born in Djakarta, Indonesia. His parents derived from powerful Chinese families. His great grandfather was the first president of the Republic of China. His father was the personal physician to Communist leader, Mao Tse-Tung. About half a year later, his family relocated to Indonesia where his father helped found Gamaliel University, a Christian college. There he taught English and philosophy. Soon after, due to Anti-Chinese attitudes, his father was held in a prison for a year. When he was released in 1959, their family went on a five-year journey; moving through Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, and finally settling in the United States in 1964. I chose to write about Li-Young Lee because of the amount of description within his poems.
From the poems I have read, it was difficult to choose three. However, when I decided, I chose From Blossoms, Early in the Morning, and This Room and Everything in it. I chose From Blossoms simply because of how it reminded me of my past. My mother and I would go to farmers markets during the summer and most of the time when we went; we would see a place just for peaches. My mother would buy a couple of bags of peaches to take home, since they are her favorite. When we would finally get to try them, they were as delicious as Lee described. Next, I chose Early in the Morning because of the strong sense of love you feel that comes from the father to his wife. Lee describes how his mother does her hair every morning and every morning his father loves to watch and listen while she fixes it. The line, “my mother's hair falls / when he pulls the pins out. / Easily, like the curtains / when they untie them in the evening” makes me believe his mother’s hair is beautifully long just like curtains and that her husband loves to see it gracefully become undone when he takes the pins out.
