Life Of My Essay

783 words - 4 pages

In the first few pages, the Author’s Note, an unknown writer tells the story of his voyage starting from his hometown in Canada to India, because he wasn’t feeling all too well. While in a cafe in the town of Pondicherry, the unknown author met a man named Francis, who offered to tell him a story inspirational and compelling enough to give him a reason to believe in God. This is the story of Pi Patel. The author (Yann Martel) then shifts into the story itself.
Part one is narrated in first person by Pi. Pi narrates looking back at his earlier life as a teenage student in Toronto, then further back, to look at his childhood in Pondicherry. He explains that he has been through much pain and sorrow, and found solace in religion and zoology. He describes how Francis, a close business associate of his father’s and a competitive swimming champion, taught him how to swim and bestowed upon him his name. Pi is named after “Piscine Molitor”, a Parisian swimming group with two pools that Francis used to frequently go to. We learn that Pi’s father once ran the Pondicherry Zoo, teaching his two children, Pi and Ravi all about the wild tendencies of animals by feeding a live goat to a tiger right in front of them. Pi, was raised as a Hindu, who later discovers Christianity, and then changes his mind to Islam, and eventually deciding to practice all three religions simultaneously. Because of India’s new political changes, Pi, Ravi, and their parents decide to move the whole family to Canada. In June of 1977, they embarqued in a carrier ship, along with a ship crew and many cages full of zoo creatures.
At the beginning of Part Two, the ship is beginning to sink. Pi clings to a lifeboat and a tiger, Richard Parker, to join him. After realizing his mistake in bringing a wild animal aboard, Pi dangerously leaps into the ocean. The narrative then jumps back in time as Pi describes the loud banging and screaming of the shipmates of the sinking ship: crewmembers courageously throw him into a lifeboat, where he is soon all by himself, with a variety of zoo animals, including a zebra, an orangutan, and a hyena. His family is gone, and Pi feels a form of guilt that...
