As the living quality and technology have improved, there are more manmade pollutions come up. From air pollutants, excessive noises, water pollutants to artificial lights, they are all manmade pollutions to our earth. Especially the urban light, which supposed to ensure the public safety, the overuse of urban light in the billboard and floodlights on the street resulted in bright sky at night. People cannot see the starry night and the view of universe but a daytime-like night. The general term of this effect called light pollution. This called light nuisance, which mean the glow created to annoy the residents. Light nuisance will affect people’s emotions, they will get stressed and create a disturbance of their day-night rhythms, and finally suffered from anxiety and insomnia. In the long-term, these became more serious and created physical problems. For instance, the excessive light exposure will lower humans’ hormone, imbalance in hormone will increase the chance of suffering cancer. Most importantly, for the pregnant women, they will have a higher opportunity in suffering miscarriage and stillbirth.
Moreover, the excessive light exposure in the city will affect the astronomical research. Nowadays, astronomy established successfully, however, the bright sky poses a threat to the professional astronomers because the glare influences the faint object observed in the sky. The space astronomy becomes harder to a mission carried out, and they have to spend more money on taking further space research by not only rely on the ground-based researchers.
Except the impact on human beings, light pollution also implicated in changes of nature. Firstly, urban lighting can influence their day-night rhythms. The trees near the town are highly affected by the floodlights and billboard in the commercial buildings. The birds live in the trees will decrease in their population and diversity by the excessive light exposure. Secondly, the light exposed into the waterside will activate biting insect population. The lights projected into the sea and create a cloudy water environment for the rapid reproduction of biting insect, and increase the bacterial activity in the ocean. Thirdly, the animals’ behavior and life cycle are greatly affected by the urban nighttime lighting. The reversed rhythm highly affected and resulted in a high population of death. The extinction in animals will get sooner.
