“The reason we use animal tests is because we have a comfort level with the process . . . not because it is the correct process, not because it gives us any real new information.” (Anderson). There have been numerous new developments and technology in our society today, old fashion animal testing should not be the number one experiment to test new products and drugs. Science should be moving forward in technology, where there is cruelty free research and testing. The modern technology, we have today is cheaper and most of the time more effective than animal testing. So why are researchers still using animal testing as their number one source for test trials? A two-species lifetime cancer study can cost from $2 million to $4 million, and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) spends $14 billion of its $31 billion annual budget on animal research.”(Animal testing pro and cons).
Some experiments involving animals are effective on animals but fail with humans. Even though animals are somewhat similar to humans for instance; our body system operation and organ functions, there are still many differences between the two. Animal testing does not consistently predict results in human beings. “94% of drugs that pass animal tests fail in human clinical trials” (understanding animal testing). According to neurologist Aysha Akhtar, MD, MPH, “over 100 stroke drugs that were effective when tested on animals have failed in humans, and over 85 HIV vaccines failed in humans after working well in non-human primates.”(Akhtar).So what sense does it make for researchers to conduct tests on the wrong species when today technology provides creditable computer models, human tissues, and human cells ?
Although animals differ from humans, some discoveries have been attributed due to animal experimental trials. With today’s technology some of these discoveries could have been made through alternatives. Therefore, alternative testing should be researcher’s number one sources for experiments to reduce the use of animals in laboratories trials. An alternative experiment replaces a procedure that uses animals with a procedure that doesn't use animals. One type of alternative is Corrositex, which uses “synthetic skin," identical to human skin. This procedure can be used in place of animal experimentation to test chemicals and substances reactions on human skin (alternatives to animal testing). Another alternative is using Computer Models for research which can be use for understanding diseases and to help scientists understand the way different substances can be used to treat diseases. The models are based on existing information and data from other...
