Listening Styles Essay

Communication is the process of exchanging or expressing information between two or more people. The information can be conveyed using words, sound, sign or behavior to make it more effective to the recipient. One of the common way of sending the information is through talking, speech or announcement or well known as verbal communication. Through this act, in order for the information to be effectively perceived by the audience, the audience need to have a good listening skill.

Objective listening is usually executed when the listener want to listen to exact figures of item in a message. This type of listening style goes beyond empathy and it measures the meaning against some objective reality. When a speaker dictate that the entire campus hates him to a listener, the listener may listen carefully to it but then look at the statement objectively and conclude that the speaker is actually in a state of paranoia or self-hatred toward something. Such listening style will help to determine what the problem is and find the solution rather than being empathic and join to complain with the speaker.
Non-judgmental listening refers to the listener’s degree of accepting and supporting the speaker. The listener tend to listen with an open mind and view toward the speaker with the intention of simply understanding the situation rather than making judgment about it. The listener must listen intently about the speaker’s situation while suspending his own judgment. It’ll help listener to get more understanding of the situation. A non-judgmental listener will try to avoid prejudging, filtering, oversimplifying or sharpening the message sent to them. The evaluation about the situation will come later when the situation is fully understood and enough information obtained.
Critical listening involves listening to the speaker’s information and at the same time identifying key information in the speaker’s discourse. This type of listening will focus more on additional features that stand out more in the speaker’s message. It helps solidifying listener’s opinion, determining the speaker’s agenda and listener could see through deceptive reasoning behind speaker’s intention of sending the message. After listening to all of the message then the judgment about speaker’s interest can be formed. The judgment would then enable the listener to assess the strength, weakness of the speaker or even agree or approve to the speaker’s agenda.
Surface listening is done just by retrieving the literal meaning of the information contributed by the speaker. The listener does not really focus the intended meaning of the verbal discourse or any non-verbal cues that comes with it. By executing such type of listening, listener might miss the opportunity to make meaningful emotional connection with the speaker’s feeling and need. For example when Friend A is whining about so much assignment to be done listening at surface level might cause Friend B be to respond “You always took so many subjects.
