Introduction
“Richard Gilman, American Theater Critic: An Appreciation” is another brilliant piece of literature by Bert Cardullo. The article itself talks a little more about the differentiation between reviewers and critics, but focuses deeply on one particular critic: Richard Gilman. This time, the main theme for this article is Theatrical Critics. “Richard Gilman, American Theater Critic: An Appreciation” was published in 2011 and is one of the most current researches done on this topic. As previously discussed in an earlier review, the author, Bert Cardullo, does not have much of a background based on this article. It does not state if he belongs to a particular institution or ...view middle of the document...

Richard Gilman, in an essence, is very similar to Stanley Kauffman: they were both unafraid of telling the truth about a production, regardless if it would make or break the show. He even had his own special talent of making each of his critiques unique.
Based on this article, it seems to be more qualitative than quantitative. As like the previous review, there are no statistics or anything that could define it as quantitative. Cardullo does a great job at establishing the fact that as a critic, by “being negative or destructive…he can help the theater outlast the ephemera described as “smash” and “riot” and “socko,” or as “haunting,” “riveting,” and stunning.” And he will do his championing nearly always in the teeth of the coiners of these imitable if vacuous terms” (Cardullo, 2011). This explains a lot; based on the previous statement about reviewers and comparing it to the statement on critics, it makes sense why critics are hated more than reviewers. The fact that critics tell it like it is while reviewers “sugarcoat” everything makes readers intimidated on the fact that critics are brutally honest. However, it helps the production because “”the theater is only alive…when it is being brash, irreverent (or imaginatively reverent), disturbing, antic, dangerous, and even cruel”” (Cardullo, 2011). Without knowing this and having a backup source that supports the differentiation between critics and reviewers, then there would still be controversy over their purposes.
This article by Cardullo is another excellent piece of literature that contributes a lot to the subject matter. Not only does it explain the differentiation of a critic and a reviewer, but it goes into depth about a prominent critic that is an excellent comparison for a Theatrical reviewer. Cardullo mentions that “Gilman had...
