Literature review
Breakfast is known to be the most important meal of the day. In 2001, The Statistic Portal showed that in the United States, 28 percent of the male respondents skip breakfast while 18 percent of the female respondents who skip breakfast are between 18 to 34 years old. On the other hand, in Scotland, research showed that almost 30 percent of the 15-year-old girls are more often to skip their breakfast while boys aged 15 displays a continuing decline on their breakfast with age (Kirby,n.d.) .
Breakfast is essential because it is correlated to positive mood. If we kept our stomach empty for a long time, our body will suffer insufficiency of proteins and glucose. Then blood sugar will sink then followed by mood swings (Haupt, 2011). This happened as a small quantity of glucose stored in the liver is used up to convert the proteins or fat into an operational form for the brain to function and many of the body’s procedures are slackened in response (Rhodes, n.d.). Besides the effect on mood, skipping the first meal of the day also causes fatigue at noon and worsens memory (O’connor, 2006). In addition, people who ate breakfast are more satisfying, more patient and more good-tempered compared with those who skip their breakfast.
In fact, few studies have shown that eating the right food enable us to restock our body when we wake up, it can also improve our memory and concentration. Furthermore, the calories in first meal can help to fuel brain, however, eating too many calories in the breakfast causes difficult to concentration and decline alertness (exfuze,n.d). In addition, taking a breakfast with high protein can supports brain function and lead to increased alertness because protein is a good sources of amino acid to produce neurotransmitters ( Karen,n.d.)
High protein-based breakfast contains 50% protein, 30% carbohydrate and 20% fat. This kind of breakfast has more advantage to regulating mood, alertness and attention because glucose and insulin in the body are more stable (Yao, Shun, Guo, Hui &Jian, 2011).
