In the movie sow’s head is shown as dim eyed, disgusting thing that is covered by black flies. The animals head on a spear is very frightening as shown in the movie and it is used to depict an offering to the beast. The sow’s head therefore symbolises the end of rational thinking amongst the boys and depicts the dark and brutal side of young boys. It symbolises the evil present within the man. It depicts a power that dictates over the good, which leads to adverse effect. It shows the rebellious nature of boys, who wants to break all the set rules and dominate over entire group through their “evil” power. Sow’s power is like negative power.
In the movie it is shown that Ralph and Piggy found a conch shell on the beach and was used by them to summon the boys together after the plane crashed. Conch shell was then become as a powerful symbol to depict civilization and order over there. It also symbolises democratic power, as shell was used to govern the boy’s meeting and the boy who holds the shell holds the right to speak in the meeting. It was used as a tool to set rules, which the boys have to follow. But as the movie progress further the problem began to arise. The conch shell was disregarded more and more, and the evil power dominated them. It also provides us with a learning that a civilization can fail, no matter how strong rules are laid, if the citizens cannot work together. Conch shells power depicts positive power in the movie.
Lord of the flies is typically a movie that shows power and who governs it. It can be seen throughout the movie, fight between Ralph, who emerges as leader of democratic system in the movie and Jack as a leader of dictatorial system. The author has used various symbols to symbolize certain characteristics of a society and power they hold. Symbols always evoke some reactions in people. It can even be related to today’s scenario where in symbols be it some religious symbols, logos of brand are used to influence and dominate a group of people.
