“Art must be an expression of love or it is nothing.” Art is just that, one of many ways that people can express love. LOVE by Robert Indiana and The Kiss, by the French sculptor, Auguste Rodin are just two sculptures that demonstrate love. LOVE is a structure of the word love in red with the first two letters above with the “O” slanted, and the last two letters bellow the first two, that is displayed publicly in New York City. The Kiss can now be found in the Musée Rodin in Paris, France. The sculpture is of two characters of the opposite sex kissing. Before Indiana created the LOVE structure, he began by playing with the letters that spell out love by placing the first two letters above the last two. He then began painting these ideas. The Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 1965, paid Indiana for his designs to make Christmas cards. His inspiration for his structure came from a church decoration he saw when he was a child as well as the colors of a Phillips 66 sign he used to see as a child almost every day. Unlike LOVE, The Kiss was not inspired by the sculptures childhood. The Kiss initially started off as a representation of Paolo and Francesca from “Divine Comedy” by Dante. The sculpture represents Paolo and Francesca’s first kiss. Although, they were killed by Francesca’s husband after they had their first kiss and then condemned to Hell for their sin, the characters were in love and that is what makes this piece of artwork romantic. The statue was originally sculpted for his gallery The Gates of Hell. In “1886, when Rodin decided that this depiction of happiness and sensuality was incongruous with the theme of his vast project.
