Loveable Winston Essay

Throughout 1984 so far, the reader has seen many unlikable traits that Winston possesses. Some of those traits include being violent, judgmental, and condescending. Despite having those traits Julia still chose Winston over the rest of the Party members. Winston has spent most of the book contradicting the Party and doing things behind their back. Winston is also similar to Julia in the fact that they both have a strong dislike for the Party. Although Winston has many unlikable traits Julia chose him because he is a rebel and hates the Party.

Julia hasn't witnessed many of these events but she has witnessed him frequenting the area where Proles spend their free time. Another event Julia might have noticed Winston rebelling could have been the Two-Minute Hate. Even though Winston has ugly traits he can be a gentleman. Even though at first he despised Julia, he still helped her up when she fell. Winston also picked flowers for her on their first date. Winston was also a honest man. Before Julia and Winston did anything, Winston admitted some of his faults. Winston also told Julia what his first perception of her was. Winston may have traits that women wouldn't like but he can be a good guy.
Julia and Winston are not truly in love with each other, they are merely infatuated. Julia and Winston believe they are in love with each other because they are in love with the idea of both of them rebelling against the party. Julia and Winston both rebel against the Party by engaging in sex, frequenting Prole areas, doing things behind their back, and disliking the Party. Both Julia and Winston are in love with the idea of finding someone that agrees with their ideas. Winston thinks he is in love because he hated his last love Katharine, who was dull, compared to Julia. Julia likes to rebel against the Party, unlike Katharine who mainly lived to please the Party.
